Extracorporeal membranous oxygenation therapy for chemical warfare agent and smoke intoxication

The risks and threats from biological and chemical weapon systems may be increasing with an evolution of hybrid and asymmetrical warfare. Treatment options at point of injury and ROLE I and Role II NATO oriented facilities focus on chemical warfare agent, thermal and smoke exposure. The core of therapy, however, remains symptomatic and supportive. The gap of conventional treatment that may be inadequate may be significant. One of the most aggressive a possibly promising modality for definitive treatment is prehospital extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). ECMO can provide cardiac and respiratory support for patients whose heart and lungs cannot perform their functions adequately. This hi-tech yet accessible technology can be understood as being artificial heart and lungs, standing outside the patient, connected by tubing, supporting vital functions and increasing survivability from preventable traumatic and other illness from warfighting injuries.  ECMO alone cannot remove or neutralize any toxic agents but can provide sufficient hemodynamic support and oxygenation until patients are transported to the hospital, and the elimination of the toxic agent the medical doctors or patients themselves provide in the hospital.

My main research focused on mechanical circulatory support devices, i.e. ventricular assist device, total artificial heart, and extracorporeal membranous oxygenation. Another research interests include Modeling of blood flow and pressure patterns, Technology Health assessment and Medical ethics
