Mobile Robot for Extreme External Working Conditions

POSTER: This paper describes a progress in designing of the control system of the mobile robot TeleRescuer for inspecting coal mine areas affected by catastrophic events, characterized by extreme working conditions like temperature, humidity and primarily explosive atmosphere.  The first interesting problem is to apply the very demanding safe requirements of ATEX on the design of the control system including its communication with other robot subsystems and communication with operator.  
The following part of this paper describes decision about migration to the ROS operating system from the initial design based on the Windows operation system. Presented is the structure of ROS nodes representing individual subsystems of the mobile robot and communication between these nodes and results of some load tests. The most important subsystems (especially the motion subsystem and sensory arm subsystem) are described in more detail; mentioned are also nodes for autonomy behaviour in case of communication loss with the operator and conditions under which the autonomy system takes control of the robot
